Intro to Machine Sewing: Make Your Own Tote Bag

Learn the fundamentals of machine sewing as you work toward creating your own tote bag. Over four weeks, you will become familiar with a sewing machine, practice essential sewing techniques, and learn how to measure, cut, assemble, and finish a simple project. Each session builds on the skills developed in the previous week, helping you gain confidence at the machine while creating a practical, handmade bag. No previous sewing experience is required.
Week 1: Getting to Know Your Sewing Machine
Discover how a sewing machine works as you learn to thread the machine, wind and insert a bobbin, select stitches, and adjust stitch length. Practice sewing straight lines and curves on fabric while becoming familiar with machine controls and basic sewing safety.
Week 2: Preparing Fabric & Sewing Seams
Learn how to measure and cut fabric for your tote bag, pin or clip pieces together, and sew straight seams. Practice backstitching and learn how to press seams for a neat finish as you prepare the pieces for assembly.
Week 3: Constructing Your Tote Bag
Bring your fabric pieces together as you begin assembling your tote bag. Practice sewing the bag body, creating a finished shape, and attaching handles while learning how accurate stitching and careful assembly contribute to a sturdy, functional bag.
Week 4: Finishing Your Tote Bag
Complete your tote bag by finishing seams, securing handles, and refining the details. Learn techniques for creating a clean, durable finish, then share your completed bag and reflect on the sewing skills you can continue developing in future projects.
