In this four-week workshop, you will explore fabric as a medium for creative expression through color, texture, composition, and stitch. Experiment with fabric painting and mark-making, create compositions using cut and layered fabric, and learn basic appliqué and hand-stitching techniques. Each session introduces new techniques as you work toward an original textile wall hanging. No previous experience is required.
Week 1: Fabric Painting & Mark-Making
Discover new ways to transform fabric through painting and mark-making. Experiment with color, line, pattern, and texture to create unique fabric surfaces that will become the building blocks of your final project.
Week 2: Fabric Composition & Collage
Cut, layer, and arrange fabric shapes to develop an original composition. Explore how color, texture, shape, and negative space interact as you experiment with different arrangements and begin forming your textile wall hanging.
Week 3: Appliqué & Hand Stitching
Learn basic appliqué and hand-stitching techniques to attach fabric shapes and bring your composition together. Experiment with stitch as a way to secure fabric while adding line, texture, and visual interest to your developing work.
Week 4: Finishing Your Textile Wall Hanging
Bring your composition together with final stitched details and finishing techniques. Prepare your work for display, then share your completed wall hanging and reflect on the discoveries you made throughout the process.
