Don’t miss this chance to see recently created art from all over the Southeast! Southern artists are vying to have their work selected for this exhibition. The exhibition features drawings, paintings, prints, sculpture, photography, ceramics and mixed media. Curlee Raven Holton, a highly regarded professor, painter and master printmaker who has exhibited his work throughout the world, is this year’s judge. JUROR STATEMENT
The submissions were of high quality and diverse in subject matter. I found a number of common themes, such as landscapes and figurative work. As a group the submissions were very strong and sometimes difficult to select those that were outstanding. As a juror I not only look for skill I also look for originality and metaphoric strength of a work.
Judging art work is not an easy task. Especially if the submissions are overall of high quality. As an artist and teacher I have relied on an approach when evaluating art works that was taught to me by one of my teachers. The first step in my process is to consider the (Design) component. What am I looking at, an oil painting, a drawing, a print and what is the subject of the artwork, landscape, human figure, or an abstract subject. The second step is (Modulation) how the artist handles the subject, did they express it in traditional ways, new ways, are they experimental or innovative. What is the quality of that modulation, our individual creativity. The third is (Recapitulation) my response to the work as a viewer. This response includes a number of aspects, my reaction to the subject, how intelligent the work is, how it impacts or moves me. As a viewer and juror I attempt to be open and sensitive to each work of art and read its meaning, especially in the moment that we are living in.
